Birders appreciate Christmas gifts that help the birds. Wings of Wonder, a non-profit charitable organization in Michigan, is all about helping raptors.

What is Wings of Wonder?

Wings of Wonder is a non-profit charitable organization founded by wildlife rehabilitator Rebecca Lessard. While the main activity of Wings of Wonder is rehabilitation of raptors that have been ill, injured, or orphaned in the wild, the organization has two other important missions. One is to educate the public about birds of prey, wildlife rehabilitation, and conservation and environmental issues. The other is to conduct research and build relationships with other groups, with the goal of learning more about wildlife rehabilitation, monitoring regulations, and improving education methods.

Wings of Wonder runs a facility that takes in birds of prey in danger of perishing in the wild—as well as an occasional pelican or other bird—and care for them until they are well. If the bird recovers sufficiently, it is released back into the wild; if the bird has an injury that will prevent it from ever being able to survive in the wild, it stays with Wings of Wonder permanently as an educational bird, or goes to another facility where it can live out its days in safety. The public is routinely invited to attend bird releases.

Wings of Wonder relies on donations, grants, and funds raised through activities and merchandise to pay for everything it does. This means that when you buy Christmas gifts from Wings of Wonder, your gift goes in two directions.

Christmas Gift Suggestions

Wings of Wonder offers lots of possible Christmas gifts for bird enthusiasts—every purchase helps the organization continue its work:

  • Merchandise for sale – Wings of Wonder sells long and short sleeved t-shirts with a beautiful raptor illustration on the front, hats with the Wings of Wonder logo, as well as pins and pendants. There are limited edition signed prints by artist Glenn Wolff, and some great educational kits for kids.
  • Membership – Choose from five levels of membership or name your own price. Membership dues go directly towards funding for the birds.
  • Adopt a raptor – Support an educational raptor for one year. Sponsors get the newsletter, an adoption certificate, and information about the adopted bird with a photograph.
  • Sponsor an educational program –Wings of Wonder presents programs at schools with lots of visual materials and live raptors.
  • Support the Wish List – The organization has a wish list of things that are needed – anything from buying frozen quail to feed the birds, to filling the propane tank that heats the hospital.

Purchases can be made, of course, at any time of year—not just Christmas.

Visit Wings of Wonder to read about programs and releases, and to find out about some of the birds that have benefitted from rehabilitation.
