A short description of the National Audubon Society explaining its origins and its current mandate.

The National Audubon Society is named after John James Audubon, an American ornithologist

who devoted his life to the study of North American Birds. The society began as an organization dedicated to protecting birds and the ecosystems they depend on but has grown into a large and influential nonprofit organization focusing on all aspects of environmental conservancy. The central theme of the organization still revolves around birds and other wildlife. The society maintains an excellent website.
