Migrating Birds Use Flyways - What are They?

A definition of the word "flyway," used in discussions of bird migration.

A flyway is an aerial route that birds habitually use when migrating north or south. Flyways often follow routes that allow migrating birds to visit safe rest stops where reliable food, water and shelter may be found. While some flyways cross vast stretches of ocean, others follow coastlines or track across continents. Exactly how birds know where the flyway lies is not completely understood.
