In response to birds vs pets posted by mtpockets60: A seven pound dog is pretty small - I'd say you have cause for concern if the dog is outside without you. For the time being, be with the dog while he or she is outside - it's unlikely the birds will want to take YOU on! Do you have bird feeders? If you do, you might want to take them in for a bit to be sure the raptors aren't finding food in your yard. Is there anything else there, like groundhogs or other wild animals that raptors hunt? I'd also try to identify the raptors, so we can get a better idea of whether they're truly a threat. The good news is that they're likely to move on soon, especially if the hunting's not good.
Please let me know how this unfolds and give your dog a hug for me. Rosemary Drisdelle birds.suite101.com

In response to birds vs pets posted by mtpockets60: Hello again! Typically, raptors have dark colors on their backs and paler breasts - your description doesn't make me think of any species in particular. Where do you live? Are you close to a large body of water? I assume you don't have a bird identification guide - you might find it useful to visit your local library, if you have one, and see if they have a guide you can browse through. It will have pictures and it will tell you what species are found in your area.
